The Data:
  • People observed at the fair: 4,000
  • 60% of people surveyed feel that the fair encourages unhealthy behaviors
  • 80% of people surveyed attributed this to unhealthy traditional fair foods
  • 86% felt that smoking should be banned
  • 53% agreed that healthier food choices would increase attendence

Qualitative Questions

  1. How does the fair encourage unhealthy behaviors?
  2. What changes could the fair make to encourage healthier behaviors?
  3. How should a smoke-free fair be enforced?
  4. Would these changes impact the health of the people that attend the Farmington Fair?

Limitations

  • Difficult to agree on scale for overweight/obese fairgoers (interviewer bias?)
  • Biased answers on survey (class took it)
  • Untrained surveyers
  • Weren't able to talk to people (visual assessment only)
  • Short amount of time
